Continuing the series of online events launching the 5th Issue of the Women in Islam Journal, this webinar features three speakers with expertise and experiece working in the fields of women’s and human rights in Sudan. The discussion is focused on the signing and ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which has recently faced opposition and resistance in Sudan from different groups, on the grounds that CEDAW is contrary to Islam.

In this second webinar in the online series launching Women in Islam’s 5th issue five incredible dissident voices explored the identity of Muslim women on the African continent in view of the existential complexities of gender relations in Muslim communities while looking to engage critically with the conflicting perceptions of Islam in relation to women's rights and equality.

This webinar is the first in a series of online discussions to launch the 5th issues of the Women in Islam Journal. The discussion brought together women scholars, law practitioners, and women human rights defenders to not only debunk the misconception that the existence of dual legal frameworks is the solution to the multiple oppressions of women within the family structure but to also deeply interrogate the decision-making agency of women in navigating between formal and customary law institutions and structures.
