The discussion is focused on the signing and ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which has recently faced opposition and resistance in Sudan from different groups, on the grounds that CEDAW is contrary to Islam.

The discussion brought together women scholars, law practitioners, and women human rights defenders to not only debunk the misconception that the existence of dual legal frameworks is the solution to the multiple oppressions of women within the family structure but to also deeply interrogate the decision-making agency of women in navigating between formal and customary law institutions and structures.
